You have to wonder about stereotypes. For instance, we often think disabled people can’t do this. Handicapped people can’t do that. And just by using the terms “disabled” and “handicapped,” we limit our expectations of them. But what happens when we let go of what we think people should be like and see how they actually are? Take Tim Harris, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, for example. Although you might see him as a guy with Down syndrome, the first thing that comes to mind when people in his community talk about him is restaurant owner. That’s right. Tim is a restaurant owner who also happens to have Down syndrome. His restaurant, Tim’s Place, has been thriving for the past five years. In fact, it’s become such a part of the community that when Tim told customers he’s closing up shop, some of them they wept. But why is Tim closing his successful restaurant? The reason should sound familiar to most of us: love. Tim met his girlfriend, Tiffany, at a conference for people with Down syndrome and the two fell in love. Tim told CBS News, “[When I look into her eyes], I see love. I see joy. And I see that I have a future here.” Their love story is as beautiful as any I’ve seen in the movies. and it’s not without hurdles to overcome, either. Since Tiffany lives in Denver, Colorado, Tim had to choose between his successful business and the love of his life. And in Hollywood fashion, Tim chose to move to the Mile High City where he’s also hoping to open a new Tim’s Place restaurant. So who’s to say some people are better or worse just because they were born a bit different than others. And while we might think of Tim and Tiffany as a special case, to them, they’re just normal folks living the good life just like you and I aspire to. Watch the couple’s beautiful love story below.
We wish Tim and Tiffany a happy life together. Share this article to show your support for their beautiful relationship!
