Being over-prepared is impossible when you know you are expecting a natural disaster like a hurricane.
You might want to leave town or decide to stay in the house until it’s all over — either way there’s one important thing you might want to do to protect your home from being damaged.
Not everyone knows this trick.
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety have conducted several thorough wind tests and issued a statement recommending folks to close all interiors doors, windows as well as exteriors doors.
Just close every door and window in sight basically — to be on the safe side.
You might think it sounds silly or even too easy, but it actually makes a lot of sense.
Hurricane Irma for example, will be bringing in strong winds which puts homes under major pressure. Think about it — the more doors and windows that are open the more wind enters the house, and with it comes more pressure.
Imagine the house being a balloon that’ll pop the more pressure on it — and all this pressure coming from open doors and windows just goes up to the roof of the house. This could then eventually cause the roof to demolish, leading the water to enter.
“The roof is your first line of defense against anything Mother Nature inflicts on a home,” Julie Rochman, IBHS president and CEO, says on its website. “During a bad storm your roof endures fierce pressure from wind, rain, and flying debris that may be outside.”
To make sure that your roof stays still during a hurricane or storm and you and your family are safe — close every single door and window in your house!
