Do you drink diet soda instead of regular soda perhaps to avoid calories? Then you should probably think again! Because aspartame is much more dangerous than previously thought.
A researcher at the University of Iowa who conducted a major study of the health effects of diet soda has issued a warning.
Diet soda contains aspartame, a sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar but with virtually no calories. Although it is primarily used in soft drinks, it is also used in some other food products. And the problem is that aspartame isn’t actually healthier than regular sugar, as confirmed in the U of I study of over 60,000 people conducted over a 10-year period.
The results are appalling and showed that those who drink two Diet Cokes a day increase their the risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 30 percent. And as if that weren’t enough, it also increases the chance of dying from a heart attack by 50 percent.
Aspartame has also been shown to have several other negative effects. Among other things, it can increase the risk of depression, which also increases the risk of heart disease. Moreover, people who suffer from depression often adopt habits that are harmful to the body, such as taking up smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol not exercising.
Unfortunately, aspartame also has other negative effects on the body and the psyche, and can trigger or be the cause of the following diseases:
Anxiety
Personality changes
Alzheimer
Fibromyalgia
Headaches
Dizziness
Lupus
Hyperactivity
Aggression
ALS
Stomach pain
Whether the study will have future implications for the use of aspartame in foods remains to be seen. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), has not been able to demonstrate any toxicity, and said in 2013 that aspartame was not dangerous. And the chemical has the approval of the United States DEpartment of Agriculture (USDA). How their opinion will change remains to be seen.
