World War II changed the course of history, and to this day we owe our gratitude to the people who fought for freedom all those decades ago.
We’re lucky to still have veterans of the war with us today, able to share their firsthand accounts of the war and keep the history alive for generations.
World War II veteran George Schrieber Jr. has marked another major milestone in his life, celebrating his 100th birthday. He celebrated his big day surrounded by family, friends and some Allegany American Legion members.
The veteran from Cattaraugus County, in New York State, went into Europe on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and served until 1945.
Olean Mayor William Aiello presented Schrieber with a certificate to mark his special day at The Pines of Olean nursing home where George has been a long-time resident.
The Allegany American Legion color guard was also at George’s birthday celebration to wish George a Happy Birthday.
We must always remember the veterans who sacrificed so much in the name of freedom. Help us wish this World War II veteran a very Happy Birthday and share this story.
