One of the perpetrators of the attacks in London on Saturday night tried to get into a pub near London Bridge.
But a woman was able to stop him for just long enough to save many lives.
“She saved maybe 20 peoples lives,” taxi driver Aksha Patel told Sky News, according to The Telegraph.
Just after 11 p.m. on Saturday night, terrorists carried out coordinated attacks in central London. Seven people have been confirmed dead and about 50 people were injured, with most still in critical condition. Police also confirmed that they killed three suspected terrorists.
After the horrific event, hundreds of Londoners opened their homes to people who needed somewhere to sleep, a cup of tea, some food, or just someone to talk to.
Others put themselves in danger to save the lives of others, including a woman whose heroic efforts saved as many as 20 people.
Taxi driver Aksha Patel had just dropped off the woman and her partner at Black and Blue restaurant in central London, when she rushed to the front door of the restaurant. She saw a terrorist about to go inside, so she blocked the front door so people could escape out the back door. She was only able to keep the door closed for “a few seconds” before the terrorist got inside, but it was enough time for people to get to safety.
“How they described it to me was they were preventing the guys from getting into the restaurant. She knew they were bad people trying to break in. She managed to hold the door for a few seconds but they overpowered her. People managed to escape through the rear door so she saved maybe 20 peoples lives,” Patel told The Telegraph.
Luckily, the woman was also able to escape unharmed.
Early Sunday morning, Cressida Dick, Chief of London Police, said that she visited one of the hospitals where the injured were taken after the attacks. There, she heard amazing stories of heroism that took place the night before.
“Many, many people risked their own safety to help others and to treat those seriously injured and indeed to confront the suspects involved. It is clear to me that the courage of those people was extraordinary, and I pay tribute to all of them who came to the aid of those in need during this dreadful attack and I am sure helped to save lives,” Cressida Dick said, according to Evening Standard. “My thoughts are with all of those affected, those injured and the families of those innocent people who died whilst out enjoying a Saturday night in our capital.”
