When Gavin, who works at a nursing home south of Stockholm, Sweden, asked 93-year-old Alfred what he wanted to do, he received a surprising answer. The elderly man wanted to enjoy a cold pint of beer on an outdoor patio somewhere. And thanks to Gavin, Alfred got his wish. Now the wonderful pictures of the two of them sharing a beer together have won the hearts of thousands of people on social media.
Gavin and Alfred left the nursing home and headed down to the local pub. And in the beautiful spring weather, the 93-year-old enjoyed a cold beer with the kind-hearted staffer, who had to settle for a light beer.
“We have a rotating schedule of things to do: gardening, gymnastics, bingo, and other traditional activities. Alfred enjoys many of them, but he might be disappointed sitting there planting flowers,” says Hans Nygren, director of the facility.
Gavin works with Alfred every day and obviously knew this. So he simply asked Alfred what he wanted to do that sunny afternoon. And Alfred had his wish fulfilled.
The things that bring quality of life in old age are not always obvious. So it’s especially nice to see the retirement home try to make sure residents like Alfred are able to enjoy their golden years. Indeed, Gavin’s wonderful gesture is being praised on social media and thousands of people have already been touched by Alfred’s wonderful smile.
Now even Alfred has been informed of the all of the well-wishing.
“I showed him the pictures on an iPad so they were big. And he mentioned how nice it was when we went for a beer last week,” said Hans Nygren.
