Supermarket workers are risking their own health – don’t forget to thank them

As we hunker down in our homes afraid to step out for fear of coming into contact with someone who has coronavirus we should all give thanks to those people who have no choice but to face people every day.

In these troubling times, store workers are classed as essential and are working extra hard to keep the supermarket shelves stocked with our much-needed supplies.

In the face of such stressful times and so many people panic buying they often have to endure rude and impatient customers but still continue to do all they can to assist us.

Letters: Thanks, workers who keep state rolling; ask candidates to ...

They are not only putting their own health at risk but that of their families in returning home every day after spending their day in close contact with hundreds of potentially infected people.

Last week we reported on a store worker in Australia who was reduced to tears because of rude customers. Thankfully more people are showing their gratitude for this hard-working group of people who are helping to keep our world going.

A group of grateful customers in Charlotte, North Carolina, stood outside their local supermarket chain with boards to remind people to thank the staff they call “retail responders.”

Jim Cusson, president of Theory House, an organization which supports retailers, said these workers are on the front line.

“People don’t realize the risk that these store associates are putting themselves in,” Jim told WBTV News.

“At any given day, dozens and dozens of people are walking within feet of their face. So, they’re putting their lives at risk to make sure we stay fed and healthy.”

In Chicago, retired firefighter Robert Lamprecht is making sure he thanks workers in his local store.

“After 9/11, praise went to us firefighters. This coronavirus crisis has brought out the best in this store and its workers,” he told the Chicago Tribune.

“They are heroes as much as anyone else who could be considered. Stop to say thank you to them, and say a prayer for them,” he added.

Store bosses send thank you notes to workers

In Cleveland, Ohio, store bosses thanked their staff for a “remarkable” response during the crisis.

Heinen’s Grocery Store sent their workers a thank you note and $100 cash, as reported by News5Cleveland.

Watch more people thank these front line workers in the clip below. It’s a valuable reminder to us all.

These workers did not sign up for this and are all working so hard to help get us through these troubling times, sacrificing their own safety.

Please remember to thank the staff at your local store and let them know their sacrifice is not going unnoticed.
