Brunswick County schools in North Carolina announced that beginning in the fall, all students will receive free breakfast and lunch.
The decision comes after the school district assessed the impact of Hurricane Florence, which hit the area in September 2018, on its students and their families.
“Hurricane Florence’s impact on our students and families put the district in a position where this is possible due to the number of affected households,” Brunswick County Schools said in a statement. “We sincerely hope this helps each and every family still recovering from the devastating impact of last year’s natural disaster.”
For the 2019-2020 school year BCS will transition into the Community Eligibility Provision Program (CEP), a program through the USDA that allows school districts to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to students without collecting household applications. Those that enroll in the program agree to serve meals to students for four consecutive years.
Schools are reimbursed using a formula based on the number of students eligible for free meals.
