Man issues plea to drivers after flying ice crashes through his windshield

During the winter months, several precautions should be taken when driving. Not only should you slow down in hazardous weather, but you should clean your car off when it’s covered in snow or ice.

Besides being a matter of safety, in some states it’s against the law to drive with snow or ice on your car.

Martin Burger of Cobden, Ontario, Canada, recently experienced why it’s important to remove it before you go.

Burger was heading home on a two-lane highway with his 16-year-old son when suddenly the 47-year-old saw a chunk of ice flying towards his windshield.

While there were no cars in front of Burger and his son, there was a line of cars coming towards the duo.

“I’ve seen ice come off cars. But I never expected this to happen when it hit the windshield. I never thought it would come through,” he told the Ottawa Citizen.

The piece of ice smashed through his vehicle’s windshield and left him bloodied and bruised.

“I could feel it falling down my face. I don’t know how I did it, but I managed to pull the car off the road safely.”

Luckily, Burger’s son wasn’t hurt and he was able to call 911. Burger was transported to the hospital where he received a total of 12 stitches. His eye was injured in the accident, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Burger shared photos of his vehicle and injuries along with a plea to other drivers on Facebook.

“This post is not to see how many likes I can get or get well wishes, I merely want everyone to be conscious of completely clearing their vehicle off before heading on the road. This will help prevent another misfortune from occurring to some one you may know.”

Even if your state doesn’t require you to clean off your car before you go, it’s best to clear it off anyways. It only takes a few minutes and could save a life.
