Dr. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease doctor, works 20 hours a day

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of Americans may not have heard the name Dr. Anthony Fauci, but now Dr. Fauci is a household name.

Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He was appointed to the position in 1984 and since then has advised six presidents on several global and domestic health issues.

Currently, the 79-year-old immunologist is the face many have come to trust in the United States in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fauci, who is known for his incredible work ethic, has needed to increase the amount of time he spends each day working towards fighting the virus.

Instead of his usual 16-hour workdays, he now clocks 19- to 20-hour workdays.

It’s hard to imagine working 20 hours a day, but Christine Grady, his wife of 35 years and a nurse bioethicist, says that she makes sure to encourage him to stay healthy.

“I try to get him to rest, to drink water, to eat well, to sleep, and to be selective about what he agrees to and say no to some things,” she told CNBC’s Make It.

While Fauci’s wife encourages rest, the 79-year-old still insists on keeping up his tradition of running every day during his lunch. Before the pandemic he was able to fit in seven miles, but now he’s only able to squeeze in three and a half miles.

“It’s kind of tough to fit a run in,” he told Yahoo News. “But hopefully we’ll change that, and sometime soon we’ll get back to some normality where I can exercise the way I like to exercise.”

But for the time being, Fauci spends his days advising top officials on ways to combat the deadly virus even when threats have been made against him.

″This is the life I’ve chosen,” Fauci told Gayle King in an interview. “It’s my job.”

Dr. Fauci is not only dedicated to his job, but he’s dedicated to the American people and their health.
