Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has passed away aged 84 as a result of COVID-19 complications.
According to the ex-military officer’s family, Powell had been fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
“General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19,” the Powell family wrote on Facebook.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.”
Powell served and was wounded in the Vietnam War, shaping the military and political strategies that he would pursue in later years.
The 84-year-old rose to become a trusted military advisor to a number of the high-profile politicians in the US, and also the first Black US secretary of state.
A stalwart Republican, Powell broke with his party in order to endorse Barak Obama’s run for President in 2008.
Naturally, prayers and tributes have flooded in from around the world since news of Powell’s passing broke.
The US have lost a truly honorable soldier-statesman.
