Living alone as an elderly person can be a daunting experience. A lot of times elderly people can be the target of crimes because criminals often think of them as ‘easy targets.’
However, this particular story is about how a robber made a grave misjudgment. What he thought was an easy turned out to be his biggest mistake…
79-year-old Gwendolyn Agard lives alone and hence must have appeared as an easy target to a robber. A 20-year-old burglar broke into her home with a rubber mallet in his hand.
The old woman was scared but she kept her wits about her because she knew she had to think fast. She also made sure the intruder knew she meant business.
Gwendolyn keeps firearms in her home; .38 and .45 caliber pistols to be exact. She kept these firearms exactly for moments like these when she knew she had no choice but to defend herself and her property.
Even before he broke in, she gave him a verbal warning filled with profanities. She threatened him saying that if he came inside her home, he would die.
But this did not deter him. He made his way inside her home and Gwendolyn noticed with distaste that he was naked. The grandma recalled recalled, “He didn’t have no pants on – he was naked!”

After seeing that he was not going to back down, she decided to fire a warning shot with a .38 revolver, but even that failed to deter him and he entered her home and rushed up the stairs to ransack her belongings.
Seeing as how he had made his way inside, she called the police saying to them, “Please hurry…Lord have mercy”, all the while getting her .45 revolver ready.
As the intruder made his way down the stairs, she fired her .45 at him. This time, the message was loud and clear. She recalls him saying to her, “Are you trying to kill me?”
To which she said she replied, “Oh, you finally got the message!”
She warned that she had a clear view of him, hinting at the shot she could take at him with her gun. Having realized the danger at this point, the intruder rushed up the stairs again and hid in a closet.
Luckily, the police arrived soon after and arrest the naked intruder. “I don’t know what his intention was, but I know what mine was,” Gwendolyn said in an interview to 11Alive
As for the reason for her fearless attitude and what inspired her to fight back, she said, “I thought, ‘I couldn’t die without my children.’ And, I just got this burst of energy.”
Hopefully, Gwendolyn will now be able to enjoy a long and safe life with her children and grandchildren.
