It’s something I’ve experienced frequently: reading sad or even tragic Facebook posts and wanting to express my sympathy… But certainly feeling uncomfortable doing so by clicking the “like” button beneath! The same certainly applies for posts I simply don’t like or disagree with. That’s when I get the urge to “unlike”, but have — until now — been unable to do so. Well, that’s all about to change, according to Facebook. And I’d say it’s been a long time coming!
An “unlike” button for Facebook posts has been on demand for quite some time, but Facebook has always dismissed the requests. Until now.
“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it,” Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at a public town hall meeting that was streamed online.
Zuckerberg added that Facebook was now hoping to launch the highly requested button in the near future.
Facebook has previously avoided introducing such a button as they feared it could be used negatively. But the company has finally accepted that it can be useful for a variety of posts, and can help people avoid feeling weird “liking” a post that isn’t positive.
“What they really want is the ability to express empathy,” Zuckerberg said, according to ABC News.
Doesn’t sound like a terrible idea to me!
