Alicia Silverstone says “I’m a natural mama and I’m a loving mama,” and is not at all scared of being a loving and expressive mother to her 11-year-old son.
Alicia Silverstone made her way into everyone’s hearts after her performance in the comedy “Clueless.” The 45-year-old actress appeared as a guest on “The Ellen Fisher Podcast,” which led to a discussion about motherhood.
“It’s so natural to just wanna keep your baby close and follow your intention with that,” the host Fisher said. This prompted Alicia to make a confession of her own, “Bear and I still sleep together. And I’ll be in trouble for saying that but I don’t really care,” the actress said.
She added that she did this because she was someone who believed in the natural mothering of her child. “I just do what’s natural. I’m a natural mama and I’m a loving mama and I believe in love and I believe in nature. And our society is scared of nature and scared of love.”
The two women also talked about the practice of “elimination communication.” The practice involves a parent picking up on signals from their infant when they need to eliminate waste. Alicia admitted to starting the practice late with her son when he was 6 months old, but she shared that he never pooped in a diaper again after he was just 8 months old.
Silverstone explained that she would put her son on the toilet after he ate and after he slept because those are the two times a baby is most likely to poop. “So those are two simple cues. And they happen a lot. Babies wake up a lot and babies eat a lot. So, if you just practice putting them to the bathroom after that, that will knock out, like, half your diaper usage,” she elaborated.
She did say she used cloth diapers on flights or when her son was sleeping. But she spent time with her son naked while she watched for cues of when he needed to relieve himself. “The cues part for me was really fun because I thought that he was flirting with me because he would do this little smile, but that’s when he had to pee. But they give you a cue,” she said.
She was married to Christopher Jarecki at the time who was less than pleased with her practice, and according to Silverstone said to her, ‘What is this hippie s**t you’re doing now?’ But she elaborated, “And then I said, ‘Try it’ and he loved it!”
She talked about how she disagreed with how parents potty train their children, in general, these days. She said, “The conversations you hear parents having. It’s causing such strife in their household all because of the convenience of that period of time of having them poo and pee in something that’s so uncomfortable,”
She continued saying that parents let their children relieve themselves in diapers. And during potty training, the children have to unlearn what they have known since they were babies and hence it is hard for them.
Silverstone’s parenting style is quite different. She revealed that her son Bear saw her movie “Clueless” when he was just 5 years old. She said, “because it was on at the Hollywood [Forever] Cemetery [and] … 4,000 people came to see and I couldn’t pass that experience up, of watching it under the stars, pillows on the ground with rosé.”
“He was so young and it’s not appropriate, I think, for a 5-year-old to watch that movie… it’s all about sex and stuff, so I just realized, ‘Oops,'” she added. “But, at the time… he loved it, but what he really picked up [on is] he tried to kiss me, like, passionate kisses, because that’s what he saw in the movie.”
