An elderly man has been put into a medically-induced coma where he remains fighting for his life, after a vicious attack outside home on Sunday.
According to reports, 84-year-old Emilio Lombardi suffered serious head and facial injuries when he was set upon in Cannington, Perth, Australia.
The attack is said to have taken place at around 7 pm after Emilio stepped outside of his door to investigate a disturbance.
As per 7News, two men, aged between 25 and 30, beat him to the ground and damaged the mirror of his car.
Western Australia Police released a series of photos in the aftermath of the assault. The images show the 84-year-old covered in blood with a large gash on his head.
Acting Detective Sergeant Alexandra Hill said there was a weapon used in the “cowardly, disgusting and appalling act”.
She explained to Perth Now: “This is an 84-year-old man who’s lived in this suburb for 40 years … and he’s been brutally assaulted in his front yard. They are horrific, horrific injuries that this man has sustained to his face.
“The man was found by police before being taken to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance where he is awaiting surgery in intensive care. He is in a critical condition.”
Detective Sergeant Hill gave a statement on a video uploaded to Facebook by the police department, accompanied by pictures of Emilio after his attack.
“It is believed around 7pm on Sunday 16 August 2020, he went to investigate a disturbance outside his Henry Street East Cannington home and was assaulted,” the department wrote.
“Police located the 84-year-old man with serious head and facial injuries outside his home and he was conveyed by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital where he remains in ICU pending surgery.”
Police are urging people in the area during the time of the attack to come forward and help with the investigation.
