21 years ago, Mary Ann Franco was in a horrible car accident. Her life hung in the balance and she just barely survived, losing sight in both of her eyes. Mary, who is now 70 years old, had grown to accept that she would never see again, but then another accident changed everything—again.
In 1993, then 47-year-old Mary Ann Franco was involved in a serious car accident. She injured her spine and lost the sight in connection with the crash.
“I was fully blind—all I could see was blackness,” she told the The Independent.
But in August 2015, everything changed when Mary Ann was involved in another accident.
“I was in my living room, going over to the door. My foot caught on a tile, and it flipped me. I hit my head in the back, and hit it on something else, maybe the fireplace,” she said.
After the accident, Mary Ann needed a neck brace, which she wore until surgery a few weeks ago. Then while she was recovering in the hospital after four hours of surgery, something happened that stunned everyone. Mary Ann said she could see again.
“I looked towards the foot of my bed and said, ‘Hey, lady in purple, get me something for pain.’ I was in so much pain, I wasn’t nice—and I’m always nice,” said Mary Ann.
“My niece said: ‘what did you say?’ and I realized I could see.”
Neurosurgeon Dr. John Afshar, who performed the surgery, told ABC News that he never expected the operation would affect Mary Ann’s eyesight.
“The restoration of Mary Ann Franco’s vision is a true miracle. I really don’t have a scientific explanation for it,” he explains.
One theory behind this exceptional story is that the car accident in 1993 and subsequent operations may have affected an artery and limited blood flow to the part of the brain that controls vision.
After this miracle, Mary Ann experienced newfound energy. She is currently practicing to take her driving license test and she finally got to see her grandchildren for the first time, a very moving moment that must’ve been emotional for her!
