Family and friends are mourning the loss of Nasir Stewart, a 20-year-old anti-violence advocate who was shot and killed Saturday evening in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
At this time there are no suspects.
When Nasir was an infant his father was murdered. His grandmother was also murdered.
His loss fueled his desire to protect those he loved against violence. In 2015, he wrote a winning essay about his pain and how it motivated him to get his mother and siblings away from violence.
“We need to love God, love ourselves and respect others to make the world a better place and to make it a step closer to heaven than hell,” he wrote.
His writing gave him opportunities to speak in front of members of Congress, the attorney general, and the secretary of education.
“We just found him to be a nice, articulate, intelligent young man. His teacher and principal thought the world of him as well,” Allegheny County Family Court Judge Dwayne Woodruff told KDKA.
To hear that Nasir died due to gun violence, something he was against broke the hearts of all those who knew him.
Nasir leaves behind a 1-year-old son.
No suspects are in custody, but the investigation continues.
I hope they find the person responsible for shooting and killing Nasir. It isn’t fair that he died as the result of something he advocated against.
