Incidents of young deaths are especially tragic. This family was on vacation when a horrific accident took place that will change their lives forever.
Police in Toms River, New Jersey, has stated that an 18-year-old tragically passed away after being trapped under the sand while digging a large hole with his sister.
The 17-year-old sister sustained injuries but was rescued by emergency crews and received immediate medical attention.
Emergency crews were mobilized at about 4:09 p.m. to the beach entrance near Seaview Road on the barrier island.
The sister was rescued in time, but Levi Caverly did not survive the collapse. His body was not recovered till 6:45 p.m. in the evening.
The incident occurred when 18-year-old Levi Caverly of Maine and his 17-year-old sister were digging a large hole when it collapsed and trapped them. It is reported that the teens were using frisbees and had dug a 10-foot hole in the process.
Emergency crews from neighboring towns also assisted in the rescue and recovery mission.
The entire incident is heartbreaking. A day of fun and frolic for the family turned into a devastating nightmare. Levi’s mother shared a video of her son before the horrific incident and well-wishers poured in their condolences. From what people wrote, it seemed like Levi Caverly was well-loved by all.
Incidents like these are not as rare as you think. Harvard Medical School assistant professor Dr. Bradley Maron has been tracking such incidents and revealed that from 1997 to 2007 there have been 52 recorded incidents of the same nature. And 31 out of those cases proved to be fatal.
Local authorities at the scene of the incident urged beachgoers from ensuring they do not dig holes or tunnels in the sand that are too deep. Hopefully, tragedies like this can be avoided in the future.
What a sad incident. Please join us in wishing the family well and hope they heal from this tragic loss.
