Thirteen children were injured after a school bus crashed through a guardrail and then rolled 25 feet into a creek in eastern Pennsylvania.
The bus was carrying 29 middle school children when the incident happened on Monday.
Thirteen youngsters plus the driver were treated at local hospitals for injuries after the bus rolled into Bushkill Creek in Easton, The Express-Times reported. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police said the bus was traveling northbound, veered off, went through the guardrail, and went through the path into two feet of water per WFMZ.
At least two of the pupils reportedly had to be lifted up the steep creek embankment in baskets.
“People all over crying and that and I found out my grandson was alright. I called him on the phone and I found out he was fine, but he hit his head pretty hard,” said Charles Holmes Sr., who said his grandson has a sprained ankle and bruises.
Sgt. Joseph Alonzo, with the Easton Police Department, said the crash could have been much worse.
“If that bus rolled on its side, or on its roof, and it’s into the water fully, then we’re talking about a much bigger problem than what we had.”
Police are investigating the cause of the crash and the driver was reportedly tested for drug and alcohol impairment.
I cannot imagine the horror on the bus when this happened; these children are going to need all the help and support moving forward.
