This is a coffee cup from IKEA. Nothing unusual, except that it’s upside down. But under the cup there’s an interesting detail where it seems like it’s missing a piece.

It’s this notch… Why is it designed like that?

This picture was posted on Imgur and immediately speculations started what this notch is good for. Someone suggests it’s to avoid vacuum. Someone else, that it’s a cigarette holder. A third person means that the notch in the bottom of IKEA:s classic coffee cup model Trofé is to distract warmth. But according to Ohgizmo, the little notch on the bottom is there so that water will not pool there while in the dishwasher.
What a practical solution! IKEA got everything covered.
