It’s a dreaded moment: you flush the toilet and the water either doesn’t go down—or worse yet—it actually rises! I can assure you, it’s happened to the best of us. But what can you do when you look around and realize you don’t have a plunger on hand? Melissa of Clean My Space has a simple solution. In this helpful video tutorial, Melissa shows a simple way to unclog any toilet without a plunger—and don’t even have to get your hands dirty! See the directions below and below and consider bookmarking this article. You never know when it’ll save the day!
First, place a towel or two around the base of the toilet in case you spill any water.
Then, squeeze about cup of dish soap into the bowl. (One YouTube commenter recommended shampoo, if you’re, say, in a hotel and don’t have any dish soap.)
The detergent will sink to the bottom of the bowl and then seep into the clog, lubricating the pipe and freeing the clog.
Now, fill a bucket or large pot with hot water and pour as much water into the toilet as you can without overfilling it.
After 20 minutes, the hot water and dish soap will have worked its magic, and the water level will be lower—but don’t flush yet.
Fill the bucket with hot water one more time and pour it into the toilet bowl.
Now, flush away! And as a bonus, your toilet is also cleaner that when you started.
