The liver is one of the body’s most important organs. It helps store sugar, fats and vitamins, regulates metabolism, and clears away toxins that have entered the body. No wonder the liver is often referred to as the body’s very own ‘purification center’.
A healthy liver is thus essential for good health and well-being – and it’s important that we take care of this vital organ. Here are some warning signs that may indicate that you are having liver problems.
There are many different reasons why the liver may stop working properly. These include obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, or eating an excessive amount of foods containing toxins that the liver can no longer filter out.
Several symptoms become apparent when the liver is unable to do its job properly. While symptoms vary from person to person, here are some that may be useful to know.
1. Discomfort in the upper abdomen
When different fats enlarge the liver, you begin to feel a pressure against the rib cage and upper part of the stomach. You can also have gas and a bloated stomach.
2. Chronic fatigue
We all feel tired sometimes – but if you constantly feel tired and exhausted, even during simple, low-energy activities, it could be a sign of a liver problem. It’s good to see a doctor and be examined.
3. Skin changes
If your skin starts to get a yellowish tint (Jaundice), it may be a sign that you have liver problems. Jaundice occurs when your liver fails to properly filter your blood of Bilirubin, a pigment in bile that is created in your liver to help with digestive processes. You may also experience skin infections and itching.
4. Nausea
When the liver is not working properly, it’s common to feel nauseous, especially after eating fatty foods. You may also feel dizzy, experience vomiting and/or diarrhea.
5. Feces and urine
If you have had liver problems for some time, your stool may shift to a more colorless or off-white shade. Your urine may, on the other hand, become darker in color.
6. Muscles
If you bruise easily, your feet and lower legs are swollen, or if you have pain in your muscles and joints, it can indicate that your liver is underperforming and not working properly.
If you suspect that you have liver problems, you should always go to the doctor.
Another good idea to prevent liver diseases is to maintain good eating habits, cut down on alcohol and tobacco, and exercise regularly.
