This is certainly not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks “yarn project”. You might think of sweaters, mitts and scarves… But this is something else completely. I’ve seen these lamp shades in trendy boutiques and home decor shops, but never did I imagine that I could create one on my own with some colorful yarn, a bouncy ball, and some glue. Definitely a fun project I can take on one evening with friends, or on my own while playing some good music!
All you need is: yarn, glue, a big bouncy ball, a lampsladd / contact and a light bulb.
Select yarn in the color of your choice.
Mark a large hole for the large opening of the lamp (where the lamp will be inserted and light emitted) and a small hole where the cord to hang will come out.
Mix equal parts of glue and water in a large bowl and mix.
Soak the entire ball of yarn in the glue and water mixture, and just leave it there for the entire process.
Start pulling on the yarn string.
Place the ball in a large bowl and start wrapping the ball with the sticky yarn.
Don’t forget to leave room for the opening in the bottom where the light will be emitted and on top where the wire will come out. Change the direction of the yarn at regular intervals.
What a satisfying feeling when you finally get to the end of the yarn! Tuck the final end somewhere amidst your string.
Then pour more of the glue/water mixture over the whole thing.
Place the ball on top of a small clean bowl. Then allow it to dry for a full 2 days.
Two days later, the yarn is dried and hardened.
All that’s left is the funnest part– getting rid of the ball! Just get all the air out and pull it out carefully.
What remains is your very own cool lampshade.
Mount the lampshade with the bulb.
Then just hang, and enjoy your new lamp!
