It sounds impossible, but for about $150 and some elbow grease, you can put a camper together and travel around the country. That’s what Paul Elkins discovered when he set out to make a “stealth camper” that he could tow from the back of his bicycle and take where ever he wished. And lest you think that Paul had to make sacrifices to keep both budget and size to a minimum, check out all the amenities Paul’s camper is hiding inside: There’s a stove, a sink, a counter, a water tank, food storage, shelving, clothing storage, a bed, LED lighting, a skylight, and even a sound system!
Paul kept the cost of his camper down by assembling it out of recyclables, used parts, and odds and ends, including a $20 used bike, four recycled fluted-plastic campaign signs from a recent election, six pine boards he got for a dollar at Home Depot, zip ties, duct tape, and screws. The result is an ingenious design that makes it so that you don’t have to make any sacrifices when you take your tiny home on the road.
“It does show the possibilities of a new way to get around and travel or to live. You don’t have car insurance, you don’t have home insurance payments. What do you got? Food.” Paul says in the video below. “For people who can’t afford a pickup truck and to build a little home on a trailer, maybe they could just do this and tour around. For people who are adventurers and don’t mind pulling a little weight and taking their time traveling, this I think would be a fun way to go.”
