Every so often a story comes around that reminds us all the world isn’t the fair and just place it should be.
This particular one certainly does that, if not for its sheer injustice then for the fact that the message it sends out is both dangerous and frightening.
It concerns a young girl who defended herself in a school bathroom when a group of boys came in. In the aftermath of the incident, the school administrators decided to expel a student.
Only, many think they expelled the wrong one …

People up and down the county reacted with rage to learn that North Pole High School, in North Pole, Alaska had expelled a girl after she kneed her primary attacker in a bid to escape. Given that a group of boys had forced their way into the girl’s bathroom, many feel the victim had every right to defend herself, and yet it was her who received punishment.
According to reports, the group of boys pushed their way into the girl’s bathroom because they felt threatened by a student in their class who was transitioning from female to male. They supposedly wanted to protest the fact that said student had taken a selfie in the boys’ bathroom, but not all went as planned.
Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Superintendent Karen Gaborik admitted that the boys had forced their way into the bathroom “as a form of protest,” and that they had complicated feelings around transgender issues.

The problem arose when the boys entered the bathroom, with a group of young ladies inside unaware of their intentions. One of the girls proceeded to knee one of the boys in the groin in an act of self-defense, and it was her who was then expelled from school.
Alaska state Representative Tammie Wilson spoke about the issue at the House Majority. She said: “We had an incident last week to where some boys entered the girls’ bathroom, and a girl kneed a boy, feeling threatened. They were blocking her way, and she was suspended from school because she used way too much force.”
She then offered her support to the girl, stating: “If you ever feel threatened, for your safety, whatever force you think you have to go give, I will stand by you and so will your community, and not for those boys who were where they didn’t belong.”
Indeed, it seems more than just a little harsh that the girl in question was suspended and later expelled (she missed her prom) and the boys had no such punishment.
