After a long wait, Casi and Joey Rotts finally celebrated the birth of their triplets on January 29, 2016.
The three babies were healthy, the whole family was feeling good and, at home, big sisters Chloe, 6, and Tenley, 2, could hardly wait to meet their new siblings.
For the family, the next two days were filled with happiness and mom Casi seemed to recover quickly after giving birth.
But unfortunately, not everything went according to plan.
Casi suddenly began to feel ill, reporting chest pains and palpitations.
Joey took her to the hospital immediately, where an X-ray revealed she had a blood clot in one lung, according to Kansas.com.
She received treatment and the doctors said they could discharge her after a few days. They thought the danger was over.
But just three days later, Casi suddenly died – just 10 days after the triplets came into the world.
It’s probably impossible to describe in words the sorrow her husband Joey must have felt.
Exactly what happened to Casi is still unclear.
The doctors did their best to save her life, but as we all know, not everyone can be right all the time. Doctors are, after all, like you and I, human.
Now, Joey is struggling to cope with taking care of his five children.
But there a beacon of hope in this darkness.
After Casi passed away, a collection was quickly started, first of all by friends and neighbors, to support the family.
A GoFundMe page was set up and, at the time of writing, it had raised more than $173,000 for Joey and his family.
