The body of missing 2-year-old Emma Sweet has been recovered from the Southern Indiana river after a search instigated on Saturday.
According to reports, an operation was launched after the toddler’s father, Jeremy Sweet, was pulled from his partially submerged truck. Hospitalized with hypothermia, he gave differing accounts regarding what had happened to Emma.
On Saturday, divers combed the river for signs of the little girl after a coat belonging to her was found about a mile downstream from the truck. Meanwhile, volunteer firefighters and police officers conducted a ground search.
With Emma’s mom and uncle assisting with the search on Saturday, Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers said: “I think they know it’s going to be more of recovering a body. I think they understand that.”
Tragically, the Bartholomew County Water Rescue and Recovery Team, working with other water rescue agencies, recovered Emma’s body from the river around three miles from where her dad’s van had submerged.
In a Facebook post on the Bartholomew County Sheriff page, Sheriff Myers added: “I have never in my 30 years in law enforcement seen such cooperation and teamwork in an investigation.
“I had no doubt that the men and women searching for Emma would find her.”
Of Emma’s family, he said: “I pray the Lord to comfort them during this difficult time.
“I again want to praise the first responders and all of those who came out to help search for Emma.”
Myers also revealed that investigators working on Emma’s disappearance had only managed to have brief conversations with her father.
Jeremy Sweet, 39, was in poor condition and said he wasn’t certain why his truck had entered the river off of a 15-foot embankment.
