Alice Pyne was just 16 years old when she was told she didn’t have long to live. The British teen was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, a type of lymphoma that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes. And because Alice knew she’d have to leave her mother, Vicky, soon, she decided to make something special for her mother to remember her by.
A year later, Alice passed away. The memento, a silver necklace with two hearts—one with her own fingerprint pressed into it and one with her sister’s — became her mother’s most precious belonging. Vicky wore it around the clock so she could always hold the memory of her daughter close to her heart.
But during a vacation to New York, the unthinkable happened…
Vicky was strolling the streets of Manhattan taking pictures when she went to clutch her daughter’s necklace. She was in the habit of pressing her finger into her daughter’s fingerprint whenever she wanted to feel close to her. But when she went to touch the necklace, it was gone.
Somewhere on the streets of Manhattan, the necklace had vanished into thin air. Vicky panicked and traced her steps back to the place where she last remembered seeing it. But after a few hours, she realized that she’d never find it.
Back home in England, Vicky took one last, desperate measure. She put an ad on Facebook in the hopes that someone might have seen her necklace or might know where it could be.
Of the hundreds of thousands of people who walked the same New York streets that recent day, the odds of Vicky finding anyone who knew anything about it were next to nothing—unless a miracle occured…
Freddy Ortiz sat at home in New York City surfing the internet when, by chance, he saw a Facebook ad about a lost necklace that his friend had shared. Could it be the same necklace that Freddy and his wife, Emelie, had found the day when they were out walking?
The couple immediately emailed Vicky and told her the incredible news. Vicky herself was stunned and beside herself with joy.
“To see the photo of my necklace, I was just like, ‘Oh, wow,'” Vicky told NBC News.
The necklace finally found its way back home—and thanks to a miracle and some friendly New Yorkers, Vicky got back the precious memento of her deceased daughter.
