‘Roseanne’ reboot axed by ABC after star’s offensive tweet causes outrage

“Roseanne” may have proved immensely popular with audiences, but the show has been axed mere hours after Roseanne Barr herself posted a controversial tweet about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett.

The show enjoyed a resurgence this year, premiering in March to an incredible audience of 18 millions viewers. Having been renewed for another season just days after its debut, big things were expected.

However, fans were hit by shock news when it was revealed that ABC have axed the show, following comments made by Roseanne Barr…

In a statement, ABC said: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

Soon after her tweet, Roseanne removed the offensive material and apologized to her many followers (see the tweet above). By that point, however, the damage was done.

As for Roseanne’s actual wording, the actress wrote: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj” in reference to Valerie Jarrett, an African-American woman who was one of Obama’s closest advisors during his time as President of the United States.

Blacklash

No sooner had the fateful tweet appeared than did Roseanne come under heavy fire. The actress – whose character in the show firmly embraces Donald Trump’s presidency – was called into question by co-stars of the show, with Sara Gilbert saying: “This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love — one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”

As per TMZ, Wanda Sykes bailed as a direct result of the tweet, and ABC have obviously taken swift action to ensure the show has no future.

While it’s sad for fans that Roseanne will be no more, there can be no question that the tweet in question was out of line.
