Robin Williams made $50,000 donation to a food bank in secret before his tragic death

Over the years, we’ve lost so many fantastic figures and all-around great people. Alas, such is the way of life; a harsh reality virtually all of us have to come to terms with at one point or another.

That said, the passing of certain individuals hits hard indeed. Put simply, when it comes to celebrity deaths, there are a handful that have united the world in grief.

The passing of Robin Williams, iconic comic and esteemed entertainer, was one of them.

When the news of Williams‘ shock passing came to light, millions of people felt like they’d lost a dear friend. Strange to say, given that the majority of those mourning him had likely never met him in person, but such was his status and reputation that it was impossible not to care.

Now, Williams stand-out roles – in films such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Disney’s Aladdin, Hook and Good Will Hunting – will be remembered forever. But it’s only to fair to say the legendary actor was so much more than his on-screen personas.

By all accounts, he was a genuinely nice human being, and one who strived to improve the lives of those around him whenever possible.

It should come as no great surprise, then, that stories elevating his generosity and kindness are still finding their way into the spotlight even now – seven years after he left the world.

One such anecdote currently doing the rounds details how Williams directly raised $50,000 for a food bank in Seattle between the years 2004 and 2008.

What’s more, in typical humble fashion, the actor didn’t want nor seek any recognition for it all, despite personally donating the proceeds from a number of his shows to the effort.

Fran Yeatts, executive director of the West Seattle Food Bank, told Today: “I was just astounded. Robin Williams is the type of person who really understands there are a lot of people who are really, really struggling.”

A volunteer at the food bank, Bill Bacon, added: “In spite of the problems that some people have, they can still aspire to great things. I think Robin Williams is a classic example of that.”

Indeed, I think we can all agree a deep fissure in the fabric of the entertainment industry was wrought open when Williams passed away – one that will never truly be filled. The memories he has left us with, however, mean that he’ll live on in our hearts forever.
