Brian May, co-founder and star of Queen, suffered a heart attack that required his own doctor to drive him to hospital, according to reports.
As per the Daily Express, the 72-year-old revealed his desire to set the record straight following a string of erroneous reports in the media.
May said he was taken to hospital after being in agony for a week. He believes using his guitar strap for over 50 years might have been the reason for the continued pain, which came as a result of having a trapped nerve.
In a post aimed at his 2.4 million followers, May wrote: “My medical adventures!
“Hmm … Sheer Heart Attack eh ? Well, I think I always worried a little bit about that album title. I wondered if it might upset some people who had actually had heart attacks.
“I’m actually quite relieved now that I’m in that club – and I don’t find it upsetting at all ! Take. care folks.”
The guitarist, who was a core member of Queen throughout the band’s astonishing period of success, also released a video where he explained:
“Hey folks. I thought I would tell my story here because it is a tiny bit more intimate.
“I think it needs telling because people are kind of making up stories out there. Thought I’d tell you the truth about what happened.
“I told you that I had a ripped muscle, that was the way I was diagnosed, we thought it was a bizarre gardening accident.
“I didn’t realise that was amusing really. I kind of forgot that anything to do with the bum people find amusing. I got kind of got p***ed off with all these, ‘Brian May gets a pain in the bum’ kind of stuff.”
“It turned out to be not really the case. I had an MRI and I did have a rip in my gluteus maximus.
“A week later I was still in agony, I mean real agony, I wanted to jump at some points. I could not believe the pain.
“Eventually I had another MRI, this time of the lower spine, and sure enough I had a compressed sciatic nerve. Quite severely compressed.”
What’s more, May went on to reveal he suffered a heart attack in the midst of it all.
Brian said: “I was shocked, I thought I was a healthy guy. In the middle of the whole saga of the painful backside, I had a small heart attack.
“It was about 40 minutes of pain in the chest, the arms, sweating. My wonderful doctor drove me to the hospital himself.”
The 72-year-old had an X-ray to examine his blood vessels, with medical staff discovering that three of his arteries were blocked. May said he had three stents put inside his heart and is now on the road to recovery at home.
I hope Brian May can get back to full health before too long. He’s such a fantastic musician and a great character too!
