Ann Turner Cook, whose face was used as the original Gerber Baby for decades, has died, according to an announcement from the company on Instagram.
As per reports, Cook, whose likeness has been used as the iconic Gerber logo for over 90 years, was 95 when she passed away.
Following her death, Gerber wrote online: “Many years before becoming an extraordinary mother, teacher and writer, her smile and expressive curiosity captured hearts everywhere and will continue to live on as a symbol for all babies.”
It added: “We extend our deepest sympathies to Ann’s family and to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
According to the Gerber website, Cook became the original Gerber Baby after the company ran a contest in order to find the face that would front its baby food advertising campaign.
A neighbor of Cook’s family, then but a toddler, entered the contest with a sketch she had drawn of Cook. The Gerber site claims she said she would finish the piece if she won.
The legend goes that contest judges “fell in love with the baby face,” while insisting that it remain a sketch.
A statement on the Gerber website reads: “The image of this happy, healthy baby was soon to become the face that launched a brand, a face recognized and loved across the globe.”
Now, no one knew that the sketch was actually a drawing of Ann Turner Cook. In fact, the truth wasn’t revealed until 1978.
Cook herself became a mystery novelist and English teacher.
“Mrs. Cook’s sparkling eyes and adorable, curious baby face still personify the Gerber brand, representing Gerber’s commitment to happy, healthy babies all over the world,” Gerber added.
Rest in peace, Anne Turner Cook! Arguably one of the most famous faces in the world, and certainly in the US.
