A South Carolina family’s lives were changed in an instant after a mother placed her son on his school bus. Neither knew it would be the last time they would see each other.
Moments after Donna Gearhart helped her son get on the bus she was struck by a passing car.
Officials are reviewing video from the bus to determine what exactly happened.
While authorities investigate, one thing is for sure, a family lost a loved one.
“He loved his mommy better than anything, and it’s going to be hard I know but that’s what Donna’s purpose was, was her son,” Carol Gearhart, Donna’s mother-in-law said.
A few children were on the the Kershaw County School District bus when Donna was struck.
The district said ongoing support would be provided for those involved.
“We offer our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family of our Pine Tree Hill student directly impacted by this morning’s tragic accident,” Superintendent Dr. Harrison Goodwin said.
“Our focus in the coming days will be providing support to this student and his family, as well as our staff and other students that were impacted.”
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Let this be a reminder to stop when you see a school bus.
This should never have happened.
