Man and his wife become world’s oldest couple – 79 years after running away to get married in secret

Love is truly one of the most unique, inexplicable forces in this world.

It’s something all of us feel at one stage or another, be that towards family members, friends or pets, individuals we q43 attracted to, or simply the world itself; the trees, rivers and mountains we’re blessed to be able to look upon.

In any case, there can be no doubting that to love someone, or something, pushes many of us to change the way we think and behave. Sometimes these changes are subtle, but other times love can quite literally dictate how we live our lives.

It certainly did for one couple, Julio Mora and Waldramina Quinteros. As per reports, the pair were born in 1910 and 1915 respectively, and met after Waldramina’s sister introduced them.

They quickly became smitten with one another, and though they faced no end of trials and tribulations, their romance would turn out to be one of the most enduring ever known … literally.

According to reports, Waldramina began to have feelings for Julio after he impressed her with his poetry. As it turned out, Julio shared these feelings, and the couple soon began a dating process that would last for seven years.

Unfortunately, their families were not in favor of a marriage between Julio and Waldramina, leaving them with no choice but to run away so that they could live their lives together.

So it was that on February 7, 1941, the lovebirds tied the knot in the Church of El Belen in Quito, Ecuador.

“It wasn’t easy at first because our families didn’t have a good relationship,” Waldramina said.

Yet time, as they say, heals all wounds.

Eventually, Julio and Waldramina were able to bring their families around to the idea that they were right for each other.

The couple had children, pursued their interests and worked hard. According to Waldramina, though they had minor disagreements, she and her husband never fought.

After retiring – both Julio and Waldramina worked as teachers – the pair decided to remain in the same city they’d lived in. By that point, their family consisted of four children, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granchild.

In 2020, Julio and Waldramina made history after setting a new world record. As per reports, the Guinness World Records awarded them both with certificates for being the oldest living married couple.

Somewhat astonishingly, by that stage Julio and Waldramina had a combined age of nearly 215! At ages 110 and 104, Julio and Waldramina had lived a life they never could have believed when they first eloped to get married.

“For us, it is a source of great honor and pride to have a Guinness World Records title because it is the highest award that the world recognizes,” they said at the time.

Sadly, just two months after receiving their certificate, on October 22, 2020, Julio passed away in his sleep. His family took solace, however, in the fact that he was lying beside his soulmate when he passed.

What an inspirational love story shared between these two souls. It simply makes our hearts happy to know that such love still exists in the world.
