With all the trouble and uncertainty in the world at the moment, it’s important we celebrate those people who are showing themselves to be true heroes of society.
During the coronavirus pandemic people are living in what seems to be a constant state of fear, if not for their physical well being, and that of their loved ones, but for the financial ramifications this virus could have.
Well, one Brooklyn landlord is looking to take the latter weight off a few people, by canceling this month’s rent for hundreds of tenants to ensure they have enough money to see them through.
As per reports, on March 30 Mario Salerno placed a sign on the front doors of his apartment buildings announcing that he would be waiving rent payments for April.
The 59-year-old is said to own around 80 apartments, with 200 tenants across the areas of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Salerno decided to waive the rent after hearing of several tenants who were struggling to make ends meet.
“Please note I am waiving rent for the month of April 2020. Stay safe, help your neighbours and wash your hands!!!” the notice read.
In a subsequent interview with NBC New York, Mario said his chief concern is the health and well-being of his tenants.
“I want everybody to be healthy,” he said. “That’s the whole thing. For me, it was more important for people’s health and worrying about who could put food on whose table. I say don’t worry about paying me, worry about your neighbour and worry about your family.”
What a truly remarkable gesture for a landlord to make, and one that will hopefully prompt others to follow suit and help people in any way they can.
