Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has announced via Instagram that he will be donating $100 million to Feeding America, a national nonprofit organization operating food banks across the U.S.
As per Forbes, Bezos made the announcement on Thursday, describing COVID-19 crisis as a problem “amplifying stress significantly”.
Bezos said: “Non-profit food banks and food pantries rely in large part on surplus food from a range of food businesses. For example, many restaurants donate excess food.
“But during this time of social distancing, restaurants are closed, and many other normal channels of excess food have also shut down. To make matters worse, as supply is dwindling, demand for food bank services is going up.”
Bezos has faced criticism over the past few weeks over how he has handled the coronavirus pandemic with regards his own company.
On March 30 it was reported that warehouse workers at Amazon’s fulfilment center in Staten Island, New York walked out over concerns related to COVID-19. These included a failure on the company’s part to notify workers of confirmed cases and a failure to properly clean the warehouse.
In any case, Bezos’ donation is sure to be well received. The coronavirus has not only experienced a sharp increase in cases over the past week, but its affect on the economy cannot be understated.
