Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was amongst those poking fun at Donald Trump for losing his Twitter account last week, after the social media site announced that he had been suspended.
Trump was temporarily banned from several social media sites in the wake of the Capitol Hill violence last Wednesday, with Twitter then going one step forward in preventing him from tweeting altogether by way of removing his account.
For Trump, that move surely provoked anger, but others were able to draw positives. One such person was Hillary Clinton, who of course lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
Clinton reacted to Trump’s being banned by bringing back a tweet she had written in response to her political rival’s errant behavior in 2016. At the time – following what we can only guess was Trump doing something unconventional – Clinton tweeted telling him to “delete your account.”
On Friday night, with the knives out for the soon-to-be-former POTUS, Hillary seized her opportunity to have a rather belated last laugh.
The 73-year-old retweeted her old tweet, equipped with the new caption of a simple checkmark to imply that the aforementioned command had been completed.
Naturally, the world watched with eyes peeled as Twitter announced that they would be removing the account of arguably the most powerful man on the planet.
Last week, they released the following tweet:
“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” the company wrote in a blog post.“
Twitter further elaborated on their decision by referencing two tweets that Trump had posted earlier on Friday. One of the tweets was to confirm for followers that he would not be attending President-Elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.
Twitter said: “These two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent week.”
“After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy, we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service.”
Attentions now turn to Biden’s inauguration and the ushering in of a new administration which is likely to mean sweeping changes to the way things have been done for the past four years under Trump.
That said, there have been fears vocalized in the last few days that the violence that saw the storming of the Capitol Building last week – an act which came after several weeks of Trump riling up his followers at every turn – could be repeated in the coming days.
Protesters, some of them armed, attacked Capitol police and forced their way inside the Capitol Building, sending shockwaves around the world.
In the aftermath of the events, Trump changed his tune and denounced those who had joined the march – despite having inadvertently encouraged such a thing by way of insisting that the election was “stolen” from him – but it was too little too late.
