Whether you like the outdoors or not, there can be no arguing that being surrounding by nature provides you with a sense of calm like no other.
On top of that, innumerable health benefits have been associated with various plants and trees in the past, especially when it comes to how they can impact positively upon your general well-being.
Those who live in cities – particularly large ones, such as capitals – can often miss out on said goodness when surrounded by tower blocks and traffic. What’s more, high levels of toxicity in the air are thought to contribute to stress and anxiety.
As a result, it’s important for anyone who isn’t surrounded by nature to turn to other alternatives to get their ‘fix’ – namely plants that they can keep inside their home. In this respect jasmine plants are one of the best around, and we’ll explain just why …
There are an abundance of reasons as to why having a jasmine plant in your apartment is good for your overall health, but this is especially pertinent if you’re living in an environment such as a big city.
First and foremost, researchers have determined there’s a link between breathing in jasmine and an improvement to your mood in general, as well as your mental health.
Professor Hanns Hatt of the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, stated the findings of the study in question “can be seen as evidence of a scientific basis for aromatherapy.”
Scientists observed mice who had been exposed to the aroma of a jasmine plant, in addition to jasmine essential oil. They found that said mice were significantly calmer than they had been previously, and did not appear stressed or agitated in any way. The transition prompted scientists to further gather evidence on the positive effects of jasmine, and whether or not it could efficiently be used as a stress reliever.
Subsequent brain scans of the mice revealed that there had indeed been a change at a chemical level.
Professor Hatt explained: “We have discovered a new class of GABA receptor modulator which can be administered parentally and through the respiratory air. Applications in sedation, anxiety, excitement, and aggression relieving treatment and sleep induction therapy are all imaginable.”
All told, it’s believed jasmine can aid in reducing anxiety and nervous tension, as well as improving cognitive performance and alertness, improving sleep quality, balancing hormones and increasing libido, amongst other things.
Indeed, it would appear that having the aroma of jasmine – or else using jasmine essential oil – can produce significant benefits in the pursuit of minimal stress in your day to day life. The plant is easy to maintain and a cheap and natural way of giving your body a boost.
