As time passes and the world wizens up in general, we become less and less tolerant of people who seek to abuse or tease those they deem to be different.
Even so, cases of bullying remain rampant – it’s a problem that’s going to take a long, long time to fix.
Which is why we need to never forget the most appalling cases of prejudice, despite the fact they’re sometimes difficult to comprehend.
The Hollis family will certainly never forget their ordeal, which took place back in April, 2011. The Hollis’s, of Central Illinois, woke up one morning to find their house had been vandalized. Spray-painted on the side of the building were words such as “retard” and “get outta here”.
The reason for this inexcusable act of harrassment? The fact that the Hollis family had adopted two girls, Meg and Alina, who have Down syndrome.
“That day changed my life forever,” Hollis said at the time.
The family quickly rallied to support their two newest members. The girls’ brothers wanted to make a video to “speak up for our sisters” – their aim was to encourage the public to stop using the “R” word.
Needless to say, the video went viral, receiving thousands of comments and reactions on social media. In the video, the boys have a set of cards explaining their sisters’ condition. The last card reads:
“Our sisters are NOT Retards.”

No one deserves to be treated like this. I’m so proud of these two boys for standing up for their sisters in the way that they did.
