What would you do if you were out and about and saw somebody who needed help? Drop everything and run to the rescue or avert your eyes and pretend nothing happened?
When Melissa Whittington saw food spilling out of an elderly man’s grocery bags, she didn’t hesitate to help—but there was one thing she didn’t know…
The man, 89-year-old Bill Greenham, was standing outside a Florida supermarket when his grocery bags split open.
His food fell to the ground, and it was obvious that the man, who used a cane and was unsteady on his feet, couldn’t bend down and pick up his groceries on his own.
Luckily, Melissa Whittington and her stepson Phillip saw what happened.
The good Samaritans quickly offered to help. But little did they know, the story was about to take an unexpected turn.
Bill was actually a volunteer at North Port Police Department.
Together with the police, Bill was conducting an experiment to find out who would actually take the time to stop and help.
Meanwhile, it turned out that it was Phillip’s birthday, but because his family had had a tough year, they couldn’t give him any birthday gifts this year. No toys, no video games—not even the skateboard he dreamed of.
When Bill offered to buy something for them, Melissa broke down in tears and hugged Bill, who explained that everything would be fine…
… Perhaps not least because he knew what was waiting for them inside the store.
The plan was to give something to everyone who stopped and helped Bill. The team inside the store was ready to give the do-gooders the perfect gift.
Eventually, Melissa and Phillip came out of the store… with a brand new skateboard for the birthday boy!
This just goes to show you, it always pays to be kind!
