Fourteen-year-old Rina Begum doesn’t go to school anymore. The girl, from Dhaka, Bangladesh, was taken out of school during grade six and forced to marry. Life with her husband has been a nightmare. He beat her and then after some time, sent her back to her parents. Now he hopes to secure additional dowry before taking her back. Sadly, Rina is not alone. According to UNICEF, this year alone, 15 million girls under the age of 18 will get married. But there is hope. This is an important UNICEF campaign that I think truly must be shared by all – women, men, young and old alike.
In the global effort to end child marriage, the international children’s rights organization has launched the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child Marriage, which will reach more than 6 million girls in 12 countries.
And as part of this effort, UNICEF has produced a powerful video. The video, titled “A Storybook Wedding?” has gone viral, with almost 10 million views in just days.
Please watch it now and consider making a donation to UNICEF.
Please share this video to help raise awareness and end child marriage around the world!
