Dad overhears his son say he’s gay – then writes him a note that all parents should read

LBGT rights and acceptance have come a long way in the last 15 or so years.

At the beginning of 2001, for example, no country on earth recognized same-sex marriage was not recognized.

Now in 2017, 20 countries have passed laws supporting it.

Still, coming out and letting people—and especially your parents—know about your sexual orientation can still be daunting.

Although gays and lesbians are much more accepted today, there are always those people who are less thanunderstanding. So I can understand this boy who was terrified to tell his family that he was gay.

But before the teen got a chance to tell them, his dad happened to overhear him talking to his boyfriend.

So what did the teen’s father do? He decided to make coming out a little easier for his son.

He wrote him this simuntaneously casual and completely accepting note:

“Nate,

I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me. The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now.

I’ve known you were gay since you were six, I’ve loved you since you were born.

– Dad

P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.”

letter

Imagine if all parents were this accepting—the world would be a better place.
