Despite the fact they’ve had a lot of bad press of late, police officers are generally the good guys in society.
After all, why else would someone risk their very life on a daily basis to uphold and protect the laws and values that keep the rest of us safe?
Sure, there are black sheep when it comes to the profession – those who think themselves above the badge – but there are also millions who are kind, caring, and above all else keen to protect those more vulnerable than themselves.
Which is why stories like this one make me smile so much. Deputy Doug Goodman is the resource officer at Hayden Meadows Elementary School, and so regularly goes in to mingle with the children and help out in any way he can.
He sees the school as an extension of his own family, and doesn’t like the idea of any of the children being less than one hundred percent …
A popular figure around the school, Goodman was responsible for one act in particular that drew the attention of a child’s mother. She was so taken by it, in fact, that she made a post that went viral on social media and would later be picked up on the local news.
It began one Wednesday morning, when Goodman was on traffic duty. He was watching the streets from his patrol rig, and before long spotted something that made him sit up and take notice.
It was a student from the school; a little boy, hair all a mess, carrying his hat and crying.
It turned out his older brother – who attends the same school – had ditched him. Officer Goodman got out of his car to help the first-grader. He zipped up the boy’s coat and gave him some reassurance, not knowing that the boy’s mother was watching the scene unfold.
Said mom took to Facebook to tell the rest of the world what she had witnessed: “Deputy Doug…is all I know him as and has the number 34 on the back of his SUV is one of the most amazing humans I’ve had the pleasure of encountering. Always making sure our kids are safe. Always going out of his way to serve others.”
The mother watched on as the deputy pulled the crying boy’s hood up and helped to get his hands warm, then he walked the boy to school, talking with him in an attempt to calm him down.
“I wanted to share because this act of kindness absolutely melted my heart on this cold bitter morning. And for me, that doesn’t happen often,” the mom said.
The little boy, meanwhile, told KREM News how he thought Deputy Goodman was a great officer, and how he looks at him like another big brother!

The world certainly needs more people and officers like Deputy Goodman. He didn’t have to go as far as he did (obviously no crime was being committed), but he did anyway, because he knows just how far small gestures can go for an impressional child.
We think people could learn a thing or two from this officer’s selfless attitude. Share this article if you agree!
