Clint Walker, famous for playing the titular character in the famous TV western series “Cheyenne” has died.
According to the Associated Press, Clint’s daughter, Valerie Walker, confirmed that her father passed away as a result of congestive heart failure in Grass Valley, California, USA.
The former actor was 91, and had been active as an actor between 1954 and 1998.
As per his Wikipedia page, Walker had worked at a factory and on a river boat after leaving school, before joining the United States Merchant Marines at age 17 during the last months of World War II.
After a string of odd jobs in Texas, Long Beach, California and Las Vegas, Walker began to turn his attentions to the big screen. He was initially cast as a ‘Tarzan-type’ character in the 1954 flick Jungle Gents, but his real move into the spotlight would come when he successfully auditioned for the lead role in the western series Cheyenne.
Cast as Cheyenne Bodie, a roaming cowboy hero in the post-American Civil War era, he became a star as Cheyenne proved immensely popular for eight seasons. It was through this that Walker was able to incorporate singing, too, with Warner Brothers taking advantage of his baritone voice to produce an album of him covering traditional ballads.
Following his fame on Cheyenne, Walker went on to enjoy a long and successful career, including roles in the Frank Sinatra directed None but the Brave (1965), The Dirty Dozen (1969) and more recently the voice of Nick Nitro in the 1998 hit Small Soldiers.
A towering figure, Walker will be missed by many. Our thoughts go out to his family at this sad time.
Rest in peace, Clint Walker.
