The day we become parents is the day that our lives change forever.
Regardless of the size of our babies, the sex, the appearance, or anything else, when our little ones are born we assume a responsibility the likes of which we have never experienced before.
All mothers and fathers wish for a happy, healthy future for their children. We hope to see them graduate high school, hope to see them one day married, perhaps with children of their own. Put simply, we hope that they will achieve their wildest dreams, and have all the fun in the world while doing so.
Sadly, however, the world is a dangerous place, and try as we might we cannot protect our babies from everything …
The Hidalgo family, of Provo, Utah, know this better than most. Earlier this week, their entire lives were turned upside down while on a morning school walk.
As per reports, the Hildalgos moved from Peru in order to give their children better opportunities to succeed in life. On Monday, the mother of the family was walking to Wasatch Elementary School in Provo with her three children, when a terrible accident took place.
The mom had reportedly snapped a photo of her son and daughter holding hands in their school backpacks, unaware that it would be the last picture she’d ever take of them.
From nowhere, an out-of-control car veered off of the road and struck the two children, before careening into a gas line and eventually coming to rest after crashing into a house.
Sabrina Pendleton, who was inside the home at the time of the crash, said she ran outside:
“I heard a series of crashes, and then I felt the car hit our house,” she said.
“I ran down the street a little bit and saw the two kids laying in street and people performing CPR on them.”
She added: “The driver had driven through the front lawn … Everyone was kind of outside panicking. We had all heard it.”
According to reports, police are investigating why 59-year-old Darren Albertson, who died in the incident, lost control of his vehicle.
“It’s a grieving community,” said Provo Police Det. Shad LeFevre. “These things shouldn’t happen.”
LeFevre added that the authorities are aiming to learn more about the circumstances surrounding Albertson’s death and the car crash that killed the two children.
“Was it before he crashed?” LeFevre pondered. “Was it during the crash? These are things we can’t determine.
“We’ll have to wait for the medical examiner to give us that report.”
Sabrina Pendleton explained that she tried to save the man after his car struck her home.
“[I] tried getting him to wake up, shouting at him,” said Sabrina. “I’m trained in CPR, so I tried getting him out of the car to do CPR, but he was too big for me to get out of the car.”
A GoFundMe page has now been established for the Hidalgo family in this desperate time of grieving and need.
The GoFundMe reads: “8/30/2022 Update- Thank you SO much for your generosity. We have had several inquiries as to the legitimacy of this fund. This family is a member of our church congregation, and we saw an opportunity for the community to help in the face of a horrible tragedy. We will continue to accept donations as they are needed. We will transfer every penny of the money to the family, and we have discussed with an attorney how to best do so. Thank you so much!“
My heart goes out to all of the individuals affected by this horrific accident, especially the poor mother who has lost two of her children.
