The doctors had never seen anything like it before. When Kangkang was born, he looked so different that at first, the rest of the family didn’t want the baby’s mother to see him. But she begged and pleaded, and finally, they put him in her arms.
But when she saw her son’s face, she was utterly shocked.
Kangkang was born in Hunan province in China with a congenital birth defect known as a transverse facial cleft. His face is separated into two sections, and it almost looks like he’s wearing a mask.
“My family didn’t allow me to see my son at the beginning, and I pleaded with my husband to let me have a look. Before they passed me the baby, they told me ‘don’t be sad, don’t be sad,’ but when I saw my son, I collapsed,” said Yi Xilian, Kangkang’s mom, according to What’s On Xiamen.
After examining the boy, doctors found that Kangkang was otherwise healthy. But the infant’s facial defect was serious, and the doctors had never seen anything like it.
“It’s different from a cleft lip or cleft palate; it’s a facial cleft. Not only his face muscles are cleft, but the inside bones are cleft,” said Wang Duquan, a doctor who has helped treat Kangkang.
The boy needed surgery to correct his cleft, but the cost of surgery seemed prohibitive at first. The operation would cost around $100,000—money that the family didn’t have when their son was born. Still, Kangkang’s mother didn’t give up hope and started saving money.
Fortunately, the family managed to save up enough money to pay for the surgery. Kangkang will grow up to be a healthy baby boy. In the segment below, Kangkang is 14 months old. There isn’t any information about what happened to him after the operation, but I really hope it went well!
