Harlem Benny was born into a family of women. His father wouldn’t have anything to do with him, and so he made up for it by becoming closer to his mother and grandmother. Now a father himself, Benny didn’t want to repeat the mistakes of his own father. Instead, he is the proud dad of daughter, Jaxyn, on whom Benny instills a strong sense of pride of their African heritage. Fathers in the African-American community often get a bad rap, but strong fathers like model and artist Benny Harlem show that there’s more than one side to a story.
Benny’s mother and grandmother were left to raise their kids by themselves, so Benny strived make a difference when he became a dad.
In an interview with xoNecole, Benny said his main father figures growing up were David Bowie and Tupac.
Benny insists on teaching his daughter the importance of their cultural heritage…
A heritage that includes skin color and hairstyles.
Both father and daughter proudly wear their hair down to their waists.
Another lesson Benny instills on his daughter is the importance of self-esteem.
“What my daughter knows is that if she loves herself first, love will align in her friendships, relationships, and all aspects of her life.”
But Benny admits that he worries when he sees boys approach his daughter.
But since he teaches her to trust in herself, he knows that she’ll grow up to be a strong African-American woman who can take care of herself.
