In 1928, the then 16-year-old Minka Disbrow was picnicking in the woods with a friend, when the pair were suddenly attacked by three older men.
The friends were torn apart during the chaos that ensued and Minka was pulled down to the ground and raped.
Minka could later hardly remember anything from the traumatic event that changed her life – except one detail: one of the men wore a cowboy hat, while the other kept watch.
The young girl did not dare tell anyone about the attack. But soon, she began to notice that her body was changing… and that her belly was beginning to grow.
Nine months after the rape Minka gave birth to her child in secret. She named the baby Betty Jane and put her up for adoption – but Minka felt an immediate love and connection to her daughter when she near her.
For decades Minka wrote letters to the authorities to try to obtain updates on her daughter, but she received no response.
She never forgot her daughter – but she doubted that they would ever meet again.
Almost 80 years later, Minka prayed desperately to the higher powers: “Lord, I’d like to see Betty Jane before I die. I promise I won’t bother her or interrupt her life. I just want to lay eyes on her.”
What Minka did not know was that her exact prayer was about to be answered. She was unaware that a judge had chosen to release Betty Jane’s sealed adoption records to her, who was now 77-years-old. Minska, at this point, is 93!
Some time later, the phone rang – and when Minka picked up, the voice on the other side was exactly the one that she’d hoped for all her life.
