A 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania died in a horrific shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas, according to reports.
Caroline DiPlacido was on a week-long cruise vacation with her loved ones when she was set upon by a bull shark on Tuesday.
Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings held a press conference this week wherein he told how the woman and her family (a group of 5-7 people) had booked onto a snorkeling tour with a local company in the popular area of Green Cay, close to the island’s capital, Nassau.
Skippings added that Caroline was attacked by a bull shark in her “upper extremities”. She was rescued and carried ashore after a combined effort by tour personnel and family members, but was sadly later pronounced dead at Fort Montagu.
Reports state that Caroline and her family were passengers on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas cruise ship and had only planned to stay in Nassau for a single day.
Chaplain Fr. Michael Kesicki of Gannon University – the community of which Caroline was a beloved member – released a statement describing her as a “powerful presence”.
As per PEOPLE, the statement reads:
“Yesterday, we learned the sad news of the sudden passing of Caroline DiPlacido, ’86, project coordinator for the Office of Community and Government Relations, Erie Campus. She was vacationing with her family in the Bahamas.
“Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students, and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon. The news is devastating, and she will be missed.
“We pray for Caroline as she crosses over to eternity. We pray for her husband, her children, her mother and her wider family. Let us remember Caroline with affection and hope.”
