Losing a child is the worst thing a parent can ever experience and a tragedy that will follow them for the rest of their lives. It does not matter what the cause of death is, the void never leaves.
However, losing a child as a result of an accident that could have been avoided may certainly feel even worse.
Even when it’s no one’s fault, the guilt and darkness that accompanies such a tragedy may last forever. Thoughts of what might a parent could have done to prevent it from happening may haunt them every single night, for years.
Someone who knows all this too well are Bode and Morgan Miller.
When Bode and Morgan’s daughter Emmy was only 19 months old, she fell into a neighbor’s pool and drowned.
Bode and Morgan were naturally devastated and couldn’t fathom what life would be moving forward. Life without Emmy was simply not worth living.
But just as the pain was hitting a peak, Emmy’s angel paid them a visit in the sweetest way.
Just before their daughter’s death, Bode and Morgan had found out that they were expecting a little boy.
Despite being happy about the pregnancy, it was very difficult to bring a new child to life after having just lost one. But they had no idea that Emmy was watching over her little brother the whole time…
Medical professionals urged the parents to get an ultrasound soon after Emmy’s death. And that’s when the parents realized just how much Emmy cared for her unborn little brother.
The evidence was captured on an image they saw — leaving both parents stunned beyond words.
Morgan later chose to share the image on Instagram so more people could see the little face that was protecting their unborn son.
Here’s what she wrote:
“When we walked out of the hospital without our Emmy, despair and uncertainty surrounded us. The parting words from the medical staff, in those early hours after we lost our baby Emmy, was to check on the baby in my tummy.
So, 5 days after losing her, I reluctantly had the ultrasound tech come check on the baby growing in my belly. To step into my future without my daughter felt like a dagger to my heart. How can life change so quickly?
During the last ultrasound, my baby Emmy lay in my arms wondering what she was looking at on the screen. And, now, she was gone.”
“This time, I asked the tech to be quick. She asked if I wanted a 3D image to which I replied, “no.” She swiftly maneuvered the wand around my stomach, checking on all parts.
As she viewed the baby’s profile, she told me, ‘I know you don’t want a 3D image but this is a perfect angle and I feel like I need to do one. I will be quick.'”
Saw an Angel
“As the screen switched over to 3D imaging, I saw my sweet baby’s face. He looked so much like my other babies: just like Bode with that sweet nose and those full lips.
But as quickly as I saw this new baby, my eyes moved to the angel lying to the right of his face, holding him, arms around his neck.”
“Almost as if to say, “It’s okay. I’m here. It’s going to be okay. I love you.”
I hold onto this picture as a clear sign that my son knows his sister. That my baby girl Emmy is still with us.
And now that our sweet baby boy is here earth side, he now holds her.”
Nothing will ever bring Emmy back or fill the void in Morgan and Bode’s hearts. But they have this image to cherish and the knowledge deep in their hearts Emmy is still with them… and watching over her family from heaven.
I can’t imagine anything worse than losing a child. The emptiness and feeling of meaningless that ensues is simply too daunting. Whether you believe in angels or not, I think all signs that someone who died is doing alright is something we can all use.
